Macro-location

The Baltic resort of Binz is located on the island of Rügen in Germany. It is situated on the east coast of the Schmachter See lake and Prorer Wiek bay. This independent municipality in the district of Hither Pomerania Rügen in Mecklenburg-Hither Pomerania is the largest seaside resort on the island of Rügen. It had a population of almost 5,400 back in 2019. The region is characterised by extensive lowlands, while the Granitz Höhe, a hilly mountain range, extends to the south-east of the island. In addition to properties and holiday opportunities, the Baltic resort of Binz has sumptuous spa architecture, a variety of leisure activities and a sandy beach that stretches for 5 kilometres along the bays. With its near-pristine nature reserves, the island is begging to be explored. The Grünen Granitz woodlands and the sprawling flint fields provide ample opportunities for hiking and walking.

Life on a holiday island

The island of Rügen is known in Germany as a tourist  centre, which is particularly popular with visitors in the warmer months. About 12% of the island's workforce statethey work in the tourism sector. Other economic sectors include fishing, agriculture and manufacturing. The latter industry includes many small and medium-sized businesses in the food-processing, mining and boat-building sectors. Rügen chalk, also known as the ‘white gold of Rügen’, is a notable mining product and export commodity for the island’s chalk mining industry.
