Macro situation

After the greater Berlin area, the Halle-Leipzig metropolitan area is the strongest economic area in eastern Germany. It is one of the country's most important investment regions and is part of the European economic area of Central Germany. On the border between Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony, it connects the cities of Halle and Leipzig and their surrounding communities and thus a total of around 1.2 million inhabitants. The economic region is and was rich in mineral resources, but today focuses on the chemical industry, automotive manufacturing and mechanical engineering. The infrastructure for this purpose is almost perfectly developed. The metropolitan area is a transport hub with a double ring road, an extensive rail network and Halle/Leipzig International Airport. Halle itself focuses primarily on technology and science. With the Weinberg Campus Technology Park, the city has the second-most important area in the sector in Eastern Germany and focuses on renewable energy, biotechnology and electric mobility. At the same time, the city on the Saale offers an ideal living environment. 47 kilometers of watercourses and a wide river floodplain with several islands dominate a large part of the city. There are also numerous garden and park areas, a diverse cultural life and renowned universities such as Martin Luther University, one of the oldest in Germany. Halle is located on Romanesque Street and was largely spared destruction in the Second World War. One of the most important buildings is the birthplace of composer Georg Friedrich Händel, the city's most famous son.
